OrtoMover is a low-cost, modular kit that converts any manual wheelchair into an electric one, enhancing mobility and independence for users with motor disabilities.

We participated with our project OrtoMover at I-FEST² 2025, the International Festival of Engineering, Science, and Technology held annually in Tunisia. This prestigious event brings together young innovators from around the world to showcase groundbreaking projects across various fields, including engineering, computer science, and entrepreneurship.

Our project, OrtoMover, is a kit that transforms any manual wheelchair into an electric one. The main problem with standard electric wheelchairs is their high cost—often starting around €800—which makes them inaccessible to many people with motor disabilities. Additionally, once their batteries are depleted, they can no longer be used manually, further limiting their practicality. OrtoMover solves these issues by offering a low-cost, modular, and easy-to-install solution that provides users with greater independence without requiring constant caregiver assistance.

Using affordable components like windshield wiper motors, Bluetooth-controlled joysticks, and compact batteries, OrtoMover delivers essential mobility at a total cost of about €260. The kit is designed to be lightweight, compatible with most wheelchair models, and simple enough to install without advanced technical skills. After successful testing on various surfaces and user weights, OrtoMover proves to be a reliable, accessible, and practical alternative for millions of wheelchair users around the world.
